Beauty vs Glamour

Hi there,

I came back from Scotland last week and I feel blah about being back in Paris. It was an amazing trip (I almost died)(ok, that’s a bit exagerated) and I’ll tell you more about it very soon (next week if not too lazy).

But today, I wanted to go back over an article I read, here‘s the link.

The article starts with “As I flip through modern magazines made for women and men, I wonder how many people truly believe that what they see is a true representation of beauty, let alone think it’s achievable. Many forget that there is plenty of photoshop and surgery involved, to the point that it’s someone else entirely”.
Then, it presents the work of a make-up artist (Vadim Andreev) who “want[s] to help everyone to see their own beauty” by making them as glamourous as the girls in the magazines.

Roughly, what I understand is: “You don’t need Photoshop and/or surgery to be beautiful, just a little make-up (and some skills obviously)”.
I completely agree with the first part of the idea. Less with the second part. To me, the initiative is great, but incomplete.

I am part of the girls who have *strong* complexes. Those that stop you from going out if you’re not “ready”.
There are 3 things I don’t like about my face. In order of antipathy: my eyebrows, my natural lip colour and my eyelashes. My eyebrows are squattered, full of holes, almost non-existent in some places. My natural lip colour is too pale. My eyelashes are short, straight and few. I always have to make-up my eyebrows before going out. Always, always, always. Even if this means being late for a meeting. I spend at least 5 minutes on it, because it has to be perfect. Full, thick and natural looking. And I often had compliments on my brows actually haha.

But still, it feels a little wrong. I almost became obsessed by it. And I can’t go out without doing it. But the thing is, yes, my natural eyebrows are ugly, but then? Does it really matter? Does this mean I am ugly? Not that much, my face isn’t so hard to look at when I don’t have make-up on it. Boyfriend doesn’t cover his eyes of fright when he sees me on waking, neither the passers-by the rare times I go out with no make-up on haha. But it’s not so easy to admit it by myself. Why? Because models. Because beauty criteria. Because the eyebrows are what define your face and that’s an absolute rule.

So yes, Photoshop and surgery are not a solution. You’ll never be satisfied and always will want more. But make-up isn’t neither and certainly not artistic make-up that makes you look like a model.

Don’t get me wrong, Vadim Andreev’s work is stunning, I don’t deny it at all. The way he plays with the lights and the shadows, how he redefines the face and how he does the eye make-up, it really is impressive.
But it doesn’t help women to see their own beauty. And I do believe that, on the contrary, it locks them in their complexes. Because, yes, you look like a model with all this make-up, your skin is flawless, your lips are full and your eyes look like those of Bambi’s mother. But for how long? A day? An evening? An hour? How can this help you to feel good about yourself when there’s such a “harsh reality check” as soon as the make-up is removed? Do you even realize that? Photoshop and surgery are blamed to make someone be someone else entirely. But make-up can do it too. When you redefine all your face, it absolutely has the same effect than Photoshop. Surgery at least lasts (which can be dramatic).

This might be a nice experience, it might be fun and surprising to be “transformed” by make-up. But to me, this is not beauty, it’s glamour. Glamour involves the artifices. Beauty does not. Glamour starts when you put the lipstick on. Beauty starts when you admit its existence.

iHerb mega haul – part 3

Guys!

Yes, it is I, I am back! I have to apologize for that very rude and long absence. It was the end of the school year, summer was here and I just felt like “let’s pause the blog”. And that’s what I did. For 3 months. Yeah. The blog is my leisure space. So when I’m not busy studying, I don’t feel the need to come here. It was natural for me to stop it just like this. But now that I think about it, it wasn’t respectful to you, the readers. So, yes, I apologize.

I don’t know yet if I’ll make a break every summer, we’ll see about that later. For the moment, we need to end my first iHerb adventure, right? But don’t worry eh. To your dismay, I’m became addicted to this website, you’re going to hear a looot about it over here.

So today, I’m talking about balms and food. There’s absolutely no link between them, don’t try to understand, it’s vain.

Kuumba Made, Herbal Healing Salve, 1 oz (28.3 g) – $6.80

Boyfriend has a cat. And this cat loves me. His name is Mortimer and he’s very affective. So that he scratches to blood. Yeah, how cute is that. This is pretty much the reason why I bought this healing salve. And also because I’m extraordinarily goofy. I think it works quite well. I walked bare feet on a bout of glass the other day (that’s my risky gangsta girl life yo), I applied this salve and the cut seemed to heal faster. Also it works very well on moskito piqure or spider bite, on the cuticles and on my skin irritations. My mom uses it for her very dry and itchy feet and it relives her somehow. She asked me to buy her 3 jars of this little thing.
It’s like the Mac Gyver of the salves.

iHerb mega haul 25 © WinaiHerb mega haul 26 © Wina

Kuumba Made, Scar Repair, 1 oz (28.3 g) – $6.80

I also bought the scar repair salve. I have a few scars because of Mortimer on my left hand and a spot scar on my right cheek. I’ve been applying this everyday for a week. I didn’t see much difference. I guess it’s slightly better. I don’t know. But it smells good, it’s a little fresher than the healing salve.

Badger Company, Foot Balm, Peppermint & Tea Tree, 2 oz (56 g) – $8.99

Haa Badger Company. I wanted to try one of their balms for quite a while. Now it’s done! I took the foot balm, because there’s peppermint in it. I’m fond of peppermint. I use the balm also on my cuticules or the dry skin areas of my body, not only on my feet. It works well. Plus, it’s natural and organic. My only disappointment is that it doesn’t have a cooling effect.

iHerb mega haul 33 © WinaiHerb mega haul 34 © Wina

Inka Crops, Inka Corn, Roasted Giant Corn, Chile Picante, 4 oz (113.4 g) – $1.71

I LOVE THIS STUFF. It’s roasted giant corns, seasoned with a spicy blend. It’s absolutely fantastic. Ate it all in a day. Maybe it’s a little too salty though. I want to make an entire order full of these things.

iHerb mega haul 35 © WinaiHerb mega haul 36 © Wina

SurfSweets, Watermelon Rings, 2.75 oz (78 g) – $2.25

This is my biggest disappointment. I was so excited to receive those candies and I didn’t like them. It doesn’t taste like watermelon. To me, watermelon flavour is probably one of the hardest thing to recompose. I’ve eaten watermelon candies that didn’t really tasted like watermelon, but they were good though. But there… I couldn’t even say that it taste good. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t taste bad neither, it’s not like so disgusting that you want to puke. It just taste weird. And I didn’t like it. Won’t buy again.

iHerb mega haul 32 © Wina

Annie’s Homegrown, Organic Macaroni & Cheese, Low Sodium, 6 oz (170 g) – $2.22

Macaroni & cheese is like a fantasm for me. Dude, I cooked so many macaroni & cheese in The Sims… So when I saw this on iHerb I thought that it was time for me to taste this. And… It’s so-so. The cheddar powder has a disgusting smell, seriously. But once it’s mixed with milk and all, it’s ok. The whole thing doesn’t taste bad, but it’s the kind of thing that you eat when you’re hungry and there’s nothing else in the kitchen. No big interest. Fortunately, we ate it with some bacon.

THE END. And remember, the coupon code is still valid if you order on iHerb for the first time :

Chinchillas, unicorns and glitters, always. Peace out pisces!

(Sorry I just… Goodbye.)

iHerb mega haul – part 2

Hello sweeties,

Part 2 yey! Like I said the other day, today is dedicated to body wash & care products. Let’s go!

iHerb mega haul 5 © Wina

Method, Pure Naked, Moisturizing Body Wash, White Tea, 18 fl oz (532 ml) – $5.62

The only reasons that made me want to buy this were : the price and the packaging. Hey, the bottle looks nice, doesn’t it? Ok, the presence of tea in the composition was the icing on the cake that made me put it in the basket. Speaking of the composition, this one has no parabens, phthalates, EDTA, silicones and PEG.

I’m using it everyday, because I’m a clean person (surprise!). I don’t how white tea smell like, all I can say is that the body wash smells… acid. I mean, you know, when you smell something and you can say “it’s sugary/salty/[insert adjective here]”. There, it smells acid. Maybe I should go to the nose shop to change mine, but to me, it smells acid (well, yeah, ok Wina, we got it, “acid”).
Anyway, about the moisturizing thing, I’m pretty skeptical. It doesn’t dry my skin, but I wouldn’t say with insurance that it does moisturize my skin. It’s just like usual. Yes, that was very useful.

iHerb mega haul 21 © Wina

EcoTools, Sustainable Body Buff – $1.65

I wanted that kind of scrub thingy for quite a while now. And there we are! I chose this one because there’s a loofah made scrubing face :

iHerb mega haul 22 © Wina

And a soft bamboo rayon made washing face :

iHerb mega haul 23 © Wina

I didn’t try it yet, but I can’t wait for having the softest skin in the world.

iHerb mega haul 20 © Wina

Hugo Naturals, All Over Lotion, Grapefruit, 8 fl oz (236 ml) – $8.62

First thing that made me choose this body lotion : the packaging, of course. It’s very pretty, but also practical. I love pump systems, it makes your life much easier. I didn’t open it yet, but I’m looking forward to smell the grapefruit scent. I have a massage oil with grapefruit essential oil in it and it’s fabulous. Other good thing about this body lotion : it’s parabens, phenoxyethanol, SLS, PEGs, propylene glycol, petroleum products, artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, gluten and soy free. And some ingredients are organic, what more could you ask for?

iHerb mega haul 18 © Wina

Alvera, Aloe & Almonds, Roll-On Deodorant, 3 fl oz (89 ml) – $3.84

I’ve read lots of positive comments about this deo. I think it’s the one that is the most sold on iHerb, or something like that. And I understand pretty much why it’s so popular! It has a wonderful smell of almond and it’s pretty efficient. Of course, it doesn’t stop the sweating, but it really neutralizes the smell of the armpits. Except when it’s very hot. In that case, I think there’s nothing to do anyway. But there’s a black point. Indeed, there’s an ingredient in the composition, alcloxa. And under this name hides aluminum of allantoin. Aluminum. Pardon my following words but : FUCK THIS SHIT. I’ve been trying to avoid aluminum in deodorant for years now and this is kind of ruining it all. This is the only reason that won’t make me buy it again. Too bad.

iHerb mega haul 19 © Wina

Earth Science, Natural Deodorant, Liken Plant, Unscented, 2.5 oz (70 g) – $4.87

I pinched my sister’s deodorant for about 2 monthes because I was waiting for my Soapwella that never arrived eventually. So I decided to buy a new one for her. The packaging is fresh and cute. And about the composition, it seems that there’s no aluminum in it, but there’s a type of silicone. I guess it’s still better than aluminum.

iHerb mega haul 29 © Wina

Giovanni, Moisturizing Shave Cream, Invigorating, Tea Tree & Mint, 7 fl oz (207 ml) – $5.36

Ha, shaving! My favourite activity (no). As the weather is getting hotter, I thought I should buy a refreshing shave cream. I’ve never tried that kind of experience, I hope I won’t be disappointed and that my legs will feel as cold as a mint ice cream (my favourite by the way).

iHerb mega haul 30 © Wina

Parissa, Natural Hair Removal System, Hot Wax, 4 oz (120 g) – $6.92

Yes, I’m a yeti. Hairs everywhere. After years of epilator on my legs, I feel like I can shave them with a razor without being wire-haired. But for the sensitive parts (armpits & bikini), I mainly use hot wax. When I bought this box, I was expecting something very basic : a plastic container full of wax, a spatula and the instructions, that’s all. But when I received it, I was really surprised. Look at this!

iHerb mega haul 31 © Wina

I really like that the wax is in a metallic container. I don’t know, it’s like some kind of guarantee of quality. I also appreciate that there are several spatulas and a tiny glass bottle of azulene oil. Classy.

And that’s all for today. Don’t forget the coupon code if you order on iHerb for the first time :

HVL901

See you later for the last iHerb haul part with the magical balms and the food.

iHerb mega haul – part 1

Hello sweeties,

I am super super excited, because I received my first iHerb orders! I’d like to shout it out, like “ORDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERS”, but this isn’t right-on, isn’t it?

ORDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERS.

gniiihihiI needed to show you guys what I bought, because I just can’t keep it for myself, I’m too excited, I need to talk! AND SHOUT. Talk and shout. Like the song. No, not like the song. But. Sorry, this is driving me crazy. I’m losing my mind.

iHerb mega haul 1 © Wina

Tada!

maliceSo… From where should I start? Hair? Yes, hair is a nice beginning, then we will be going down to the toe. But first, some general comments :

  • iHerb is an american website that sells mostly natural products (beauty, grocery and other stuff). Not all of them are organic, but there are some.
  • The orders were sent from California and I received them, in Paris, France, in 8 days, weekend included. Couldn’t wish for a faster delivery time!
  • The items are very well packed. The bottle caps are sealed with tape, so that they don’t accidently open in the package. Plus, liquid products are packed in individual zip lock bags, which is even saffer.
  • All the products arrived in an excellent state and there was no missing.
  • I had mini-yellow highlighter pens as gifts, which is awesome for a student like me

Alright, now make some popcorn, because the list is quite consequent. And still, you’re lucky because I decided to make it in several parts… Otherwise, you would all be dead at the end of the post. So today, we’re talking about hair and face products.

iHerb mega haul 2 © Wina

Nature’s Gate, Hair Defense Shampoo, Pomegranate Sunflower, 18 fl oz (532 ml) – $5.09

My Lush Daddy-O shampoo is almost over. I decided to choose this shampoo because it’s for color-treated hair, it says that it defends “from the damaging effects of UV rays, the environment and styling”.
It’s paraben, sodium lauryl/laureth/coco sulfate, phthalate and butylene glycol free. Cruelty free and vegan also. And if I can read the composition properly, it seems that it also is silicone and PEG free. So that’s pretty good. But even if the composition is important for me, I have to admit that I mainly took it because it’s formulated with sunflower. I mean, SUNFLOWER. I love sunflower. This is probably my favourite flower (wink wink if you want to send me a gift or something)(well ok, at least I tried).

I used it once, of course, because I just couldn’t wait for that. And it smells suuuper good. It’s a nice sweet smell of pomegranate and tea, not sickening at all. At least, you can say that yes, they didn’t lie, there are indeed pomegranate and red tea leaf in it.
About the texture, it’s fun. I find it fun anyway. It’s like a jelly. Have you ever touched aloe vera gel? Because it’s that kind of texture. It foams well, which is a good surprise, because natural shampoos have the reputation to not foam much.
In conclusion, I’m very satisfied of this buy, especially as it’s very good value.

iHerb mega haul 3 © Wina

Nature’s Gate, Chamomille Conditioner, Replenishing, 18 fl oz (532 ml) – $5.09

Conditioners are a pain. THEY END TOO QUICKLY. Grr. So I took this big bottle, so that I could be peaceful for a while. I didn’t open it yet, because I’m still using my Korres Almond & Linseed conditioner.
Anyway, it’s supposed to “effectively conditions and replenishes weakened color-treated hair to support the vibrancy of color and highlights while improving texture”. Nice program. It’s formulated with chamomile, horsetail and rosemary. I guess the smell will be very herbal. It doesn’t bother me, as I like the scent of rosemary in cosmetics. And like the Hair Defending shampoo, this conditioner is paraben, sodium lauryl/laureth/coco sulfate, phthalate, butylene glycol, silicone and PEG free + cruelty free and vegan.

iHerb mega haul 4 © Wina

Desert Essence, Organics, Green Apple & Ginger Shampoo, 8 fl oz (237 ml) – $6.05

If you are quite interested by american beauty products, you might have heard of Desert Essence. I’ve read and heard loads of nice words about their shampoos and conditioners, so I decided to take one, but not for me. For boyfriend, because he’s in love with apple. It’s supposed to be a surprise, but I don’t think he will be reading this post, because, you know, cosmetics, girl talk and all blah. And if, however, I’m wrong :

hello
Anyway, it says it gives volume and fullness to fine, thin hair. This shampoo has organic ingredients, which is nice. It’s 100% vegan, wheat and gluten free. There’s no parabens, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates, phthalates, artificial fragrances or colors, silicones, EDTA, glycol, or petroleum based ingredients. Plus, it’s cruelty free and biodegradable.

iHerb mega haul 17 © Wina

Dickinson Brands, Original Witch Hazel, Pore Perfecting Toner, 16 fl oz (473 ml) – $4.85

I like witch hazel. I like the word in english. In french, it’s less funny, “hamamélis”. Not very attractive eh? While “witch hazel” makes you feel like you put some magical thing on your face. I used to have a witch hazel hydrolate and I really liked it, so I took this Dickson Brands bottle. It’s 100% natural and there’s no animal testing. But there’s alcohol in it. I didn’t opened it yet, but after ordering it, I’ve heard that the smell was bad. I’m scared.

iHerb mega haul 6 © Wina iHerb mega haul 7 © Wina

EcoTools, Fresh & Flawless Complexion Brush Set, 5 Piece Brush Set – $13.28

When I saw that kit on the website, I was like “iiiiih neeeeeeed”. And as I’m weak, I put it in my basket. But I must say I regret nothing. I mean, I’ve never ever seen such cute brushes. The details are wonderful, it’s very esthetic. And soft! The bristles are cruelty-free and super soft, they seem to be good quality. The ferrules are made of recycled aluminum and the handles of sleek bamboo. Also, it’s a travel kit, so the brushes are smaller than standard ones. But it’s good for me, as like to be very close to the mirror when I make-up.

In the kit, there are :

  • Flat Concealer Brush : great for applying creamy or liquid concealer
  • Buffing Concealer Brush : more for powdery concealer I think. But the bristles are pretty dense, so I don’t know, maybe for blending the liquid/creamy concealer
  • Precision Foundation Brush : this brush is clearly too small for that! I don’t know what I’m going to do with that… Maybe applying my face masks
  • Complexion Blending Brush : might be nice for face powder or blush
  • Full Powder Brush : good for powder, blush, bronzer, highlighter

I didn’t test them yet, but I can’t wait for it.

iHerb mega haul 8 © Wina

Bdellium Tools, Green Bambu Series, Smoky Eyes, 5 Piece Brush Set – $22.95

Well, I took a face brushes kit, so I had to take an eye brushes kit, right? Right. Super soft synthetic bristles and bamboo handles there too. Plus, they’re green, which is cool. Hey, the look of the brushes matters a bit. Oh and you have to know that contrary to the Eco Tools kit, you can buy the brushes of the Bdellium Tools set separately if you’re not interested by the bundle.

In the set, there’s the 769B Angled Contour brush. It’s a quite dense bias cut brush. Actually, I don’t really know what I’m going to do with it. Nose highlighting maybe?

iHerb mega haul 9 © Wina iHerb mega haul 10 © Wina

781B Crease brush : a good basic brush for blending the eyeshadows or for doing the cut crease.

iHerb mega haul 11 © Wina iHerb mega haul 12 © Wina

760B Liner/Brow brush : my favourite! Even if I didn’t try any of the brushes yet. It’s my favourite because it’s the smallest eyeliner brush I’ve ever seen. It’s so cute. I’m always complaining about too thick eyeliner brushes (I mainly use cream or gel eyeliner) and I think this one will be perfect.

iHerb mega haul 13 © Wina

716B Smoky Eyeliner brush : well, I don’t know what to do with this brush neither. Probably the highlight under the eyebrows or for smudging the eyeliner line.

iHerb mega haul 14 © Wina

777B Shadow brush : a nice classical brush for applying the eyeshadows.

iHerb mega haul 15 © Wina

And last but not least for today, the Madre Bees Beeswax lip balms with vitamine E (the brand changed its name to Sierra Bees). I got them as freebies in my orders but they usually cost $0.85. I chose the Organic Mint Burst, Organic Pomegranate and Organic Honey ones.

I didn’t dare opening them yet, as I still have several lip balms that are already opened, I want to finish them first. But they seem to be great, I’ve heard good things about them. In any case, they are organic and the beeswax is USDA-Certified Organic, which is a guarantee of quality (USDA means United States Department of Agriculture for those who are not familiar with it).

iHerb mega haul 16 © Wina

That’s all for today. I think there will be 3 parts in total. Next time I’ll probably be talking about body wash and care. Meanwhile, if you are tempted to order some things on iHerb, I have something for you. If it’s your first order, here’s my coupon code :

HVL901

With that, you’ll save $5 if your purchase is under $40 and $10 if it’s of $40 and up. Feel free to tell me what you bought in your first order (and not-first order too, my never-ending wishlist is not long enough)!

Soft bling

Hello sweeties,

About 2 monthes ago, I was talking about a H&M nail polishes set and how much I loved the tangerine nail polish. I did a simple nail art : tangerine as base, midnight blue triangle with a Bourjois mini-nail polish in the shade 58 and dots with H&M Golden Treasure. I really liked this nail art. It’s easy to do and it has its effect.

Peacock somehow

Hello sweeties,

Last makeup tutorial with the Cameleon palette. It’s a peacock feather inspired eyelook. I was feeling pretty proud about it, as I’m not comfortable at all with colours, as you now know. I said I was. Because last week the blogger from Tête de Thon posted that beautiful peacock inspired eye makeup, and I was like “Ok, my try is bullshit” haha. But I don’t really tend to be that artistic. I don’t have the patience, I’m just good at looking the others doing so and be fascinated.

High Violet

Hello sweeties,

I’m not very comfortable with colours for the eye make-up. I always use brown, bronze, golden or beige shades for my eyes. “Neutrals”. I think it’s because it’s reassuring. I know it will suit my brown eyes in any case. It also suits my personnality, I guess. I’m someone who is pretty calm and discrete and this is what those colours inspire me. But sometimes, I like to surprise myself and try some things. Like when I discovered that green shades could work quite well on me (well, OK, that wasn’t that much risky, but still)(let me feel brave in my own way). So, the other day I tried a purpley eye look.

I’d say it’s nice for spring, fresh and delicate. I’d see myself wearing this make-up with a virginal dress, a wreath made of flowers on my head, running barefoot in a field of poppies and puppies. Or I’d just put a plaid shirt and a pair of jeans and buy enough to fill the fridge up. Like the other day. I wore my NYX Indian Pink Round Lipstick (ex favourite nude lipstick) though, to preserve my dignity.
